Today (Feb 21st), the Silver Surfers made it to the Hawaiian Style Cafe. They were given a big table because it was clear to the staff that they meant business. Debbie got her pancakes. Last year Lindsey saw that she needed help keeping up with the Silver Surfers. So for 2018, Lindsey brought in a photographer and an advance team (aka Paradise Homies) in preparation for the Silver Surfers. The advance team checks out possible locations for the Silver Surfers before they go.
One of their first visits was the Pololu Valley and accompanying hike. The highway ends at the trail head. There is a 15 to 20 minute hike down to the beach. It is a stunning view. However, the path can be muddy and slick. It can be quite a hike back up. Last year, the Silver Surfers had seen other people fall on the trail. (They feel that dirt on their pants would detract from the surfer’s over all coolness factor. ) The advance team went above and beyond and hiked to the top of another ridge for a total of a 5 mile hike. The advance team approved the Pololu Valley for the Silver Surfers but suggested that the Surfers defer the extended hike. The Surfers agreed with the suggestion as they have hiked this trail before. Today was a good day to break in the snorkeling gear. Joyce and Jerry took the group to a new beach. Waialea beach is one of the more popular white sand beaches on the Big Island. The beach is also called “69 beach” because of the number 69 utility pole close to the parking area of this beach. It was awesome with plenty of shade and not too many people.
Joyce and Jerry entered the water to snorkel. Debbie and Larry decided this should be their 2018 snorkeling inaugural site. Turns out they also provided entertainment for the beach crowd. They decided to put their fins on before they got in the water. (Perhaps not the best move). Larry went first. He got his fins on, walked backwards and in Joyce’s words “flopped” in. Larry says that he persevered. When Larry got in the water, he stuck his head in to see muck and nothing else. He retreated back to the beach and rebooted.
Debbie put her fins on and started walking out. However, she did not walk backwards. No, she was charging straight ahead into the abyss. Unfortunately, the tide had no mercy. She couldn’t go backward or forward. She just stood there trying to look cool, not get knocked over and dragged out. Eventually, Debbie needed to make a move. (She can’t just stand there all day struggling). So after about 5 minutes of flapping around, Debbie turned around to inch back into the water. Eventually, she just fell into the water and started swimming like she meant to do this. Joyce got a big hee-haw out of Debbie’s entry. Debbie was able to see some fish. (She might just be saying that – sometimes she makes things up). Her exit from the water was not as dramatic although Debbie did notice that other people on the beach were smiling and waving at her. She thinks that they appreciate the entertainment value that she provided.
