It suddenly became apparent to Debbie why the “Road to the Sun” is called the Road to the Sun.  After driving through fog, rain, clouds, and passing over the Continental Divide, the sun bursts through and the weather is calmer.  It truly is a winding, scary, (in my opinion since I used to get in the bottom of the car when we went over a bridge) road to the sun.  No one else in the car seems to be upset.

After arriving at Logan’s Pass, we decided to take the Hidden Falls hike above the ranger’s station.  It is deceiving and looks easy with a nice gentle boardwalk.  It is raining and Debbie is breaking in her new hat and has discovered her scarf.  She is feeling somewhat European.  She has also snuck her gloves into her coat pocket.  To top it off, she has new walking sticks.  Okay, she can’t really set the height but Larry assists on request.  He feels that he only needs one stick.

After about 10 minutes, Debbie has said the heck with it and put the gloves on.  After about 10 more minutes, she notices that the boardwalk is not really so nice and are switchbacks that higher and steeper.  Hey, it is not nice to make people step up double step in one step.  It is also starting to get hot and no stinking falls yet.  Another few minutes and the gloves are off followed by the jacket.  The scarf is maintained as a fashion statement but eventually it also comes off.  Did you know that switchbacks on boardwalks can make you breathe heavy and have to lean over to catch your breath?

Glacier National Park

Today was our introduction to Glacier National Park.  We began our day with a change in planes.  It was cloudy and overcast.  No hiking but a drive on the “Road to the Sun”.  The big excitement was that Larry was able to qualify for a lifetime membership to the National Parks for $10.00!  This set off a flurry of activity as to what park Debbie and Larry should visit next.  Debbie purchased a new hiking hat as she had forgotten the old one at home.  So, Lindsey gets her wish of finally getting Debbie’s hat for good.  It was really Lindsey’s hat as it had walked strenuous hikes with her and probably would not like going on moderate hikes.

After standing around in the rain for awhile breaking in the hat, the group started the drive.  After about 15 minutes of driving in the rain and fog, the group decided to eat lunch in the car.  It turned out to be a good move allowing the fog to clear off enough to go on.   The day was raining and cold but breath-taking scenery.  Once we passed the Continental divide, we finally saw the sun.

Washington Bound

We began our vacation late Friday afternoon with a trip to Spokane on Alaska Airlines.  Larry perused the menu offerings and seemed somewhat excited until Debbie pointed out that a meal used to be free.  The travelers contented themselves with buying the use of DVD players and settled back to enjoy their movie.  Unfortunately, their window neighbor felt that she needed the window up to read her book.  This action caused the movie viewers shall we call it “disharmony” and made their eyes hurt.  Larry finally put his sunglasses on and Debbie just lay face down on her tray table on top of the DVD players.  Luckily, the plane was 35 minutes early giving them time to regroup before the next flight.

The next flight was better in that it was dark and only two seats per row.  However, Larry’s bags did not fit in the overhead thus involving packing bags around Debbie’s feet.  The travelers arrive in Spokane at 10:15 somewhat agitated and got to the room at 11:00 to find a constantly running toilet.  The good news is that they were in Spokane and were able to change rooms immediately.  Best of all, it was cool enough to need a jacket.  Did I mention that the hotel is in the middle of a pasture?
